Proper Canvas Tarp Usage

There are many uses for canvas tarps, but it is necessary to make sure you buy the right kind of canvas tarpaulin before you depend on one to protect your items.

Canvas Tarps come in many weights and styles. Your lighter weights, such as 10 oz. or 12 oz. tarps are best used to cover stationary items, such as tractors, log piles, ATVs, etc. 12oz canvas tarps -can- be used in light haul or short distance situations. Traditionally, your heavy duty canvas tarp, which is made of a 14.90 oz material, should be used for longer haul, tougher situations. It is important, when buying a canvas tarp, to find out what the weight of the material is before and after treatment, that way you can compare different tarps on an even basis.

Most of the light and middle weight tarps come with grommets. Brass grommets are generally higher quality, so take a good look at the corners of the tarp. Additionally, check for grommet spacing. Grommets should be placed every 3' on a tarpaulin, preferably every 2', if you can order a custom tarp. Heavy duty canvas tarps sometimes use d-rings instead of grommets, which can be a lot handier for truckers or when placing a tarp over an item that will be hauled for a long distance.

Most of the stronger canvas tarps will have some sort of binding sewn into the hem, sometimes a poly rope or even seat belt webbing seconds, often refered to as leader webbing. Tarps without this reinforcing will have a tendancy to rip easier than those with reinforcements.

Canvas tarps are TREATED, so it is important that you not cover items underneath the tarp that might absorb the treatment coloring, such as a couch or other types of furniture. Using a treated canvas tarpaulin incorrectly may result in damaging the very thing you are trying to protect. Because canvas tarps can 'breath', which means that air can flow through the material, canvas is an exceptional material to use for long term storage over outdoor equipment. Keep in mind that American Made canvas tarpaulins often times have better resistance to water than the cheap imports. If you have a $50,000 piece of equipment to cover, it is better to pay a few extra dollars up front than to cover that item up with a tarp that is not going to protect it in the least.

Buying American is more than a one-line sales tag - it really can mean the difference between exceptional or inadequate protection of your property.
